Conditions for cooperative forest management on Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) lekking sites in Finland

چکیده
In Finland, private forest owners own nearly 60% of land. The average size a property is around 30 hectares. Many identify as multi-objective with varying management goals related to recreation, biodiversity, and scenery, in addition timber production. aim this research was assess how cooperative approach game-oriented could be perceived by also evaluate the type mechanisms that influence principles put into practice. Game-oriented refers forestry practices maintain habitats grouse species, such highly-valued game species capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.). lekking sites are extensive (up 20 hectares) can located on several properties. applied improve quality but would require across boundaries. However, openness or has been unknown. This consisted two double-sampling survey studies included three surveys (two for owners, one professionals) qualitative interview study which together explain use methods, beliefs associate sites, willing ready they participate practices. results indicated methods increasingly approved intrigued cooperation. currently independent management, norms, restricted services communication between may hinder their interest participating cross-boundary management. findings emphasise importance owners’ decision-making power Cooperative schemes promoted through cooperation similar yield optimal solutions wide capercaillie.

Simple and Effective Methods of Freezing Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) Semen
A continuous decline in the number and range of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) in many European countries can be observed, mostly due to habitat destruction by human activity, unecological forestry management, and increased density of natural predators. Ex situ in vitro gene banks provide a unique opportunity to preserve the genetic material for future generations. Simple and effective cryo...
متن کاملEstimating Population Size for Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) with Spatial Capture-Recapture Models Based on Genotypes from One Field Sample
We conducted a survey of an endangered and cryptic forest grouse, the capercaillie Tetrao urogallus, based on droppings collected on two sampling occasions in eight forest fragments in central Switzerland in early spring 2009. We used genetic analyses to sex and individually identify birds. We estimated sex-dependent detection probabilities and population size using a modern spatial capture-rec...

© WILDLIFE BIOLOGY · 9:4 (2003) Biodiversity concerns are now seen as crucial factors in Finnish forestry, also outside nature reserves, i.e. in commercial forests. Foresters and other people earning their living from forestry are often rural people, and hunting is their axiomatic activity or has been a hobby since their youth. This is perhaps why forest professionals in Finland have always bee...

© WILDLIFE BIOLOGY · 9:4 (2003) In landscapes altered by human activities, many species are restricted to small patches of habitat. Species that were once common have decreased both in distribution and density, and many have become extinct (Ceballos & Ehrlich 2002), mainly due to habitat deterioration, loss and fragmentation (Hilton-Taylor 2000). Previously contiguous populations have been turn...

© WILDLIFE BIOLOGY · 6:4 (2000) Even if the mean rate of population growth is positive, populations are in danger of becoming extinct if they are too small to buffer environmental and demographic fluctuations. But how small is 'too small'? Answering this question is important to guide management decisions in fragmented landscapes. Therefore, a major task of conservation biology is to determine ...
